a couple of form-time sessions on Faulkes...

Uplands signed up to a themed observation day, where the slots throughout the day would be dedicated to taking images for researchers. We signed up for a 2pm slot both yesterday and today, since it would be in form time and anyone interested could join us (about 10 takers yesterday, and 3 students today).

19th May 2011

We took a couple of images of the supernova remnant CBT 37A before we realised you couldn't see the actual supernova (it was either due to the moon being too close, or being too low on the horizon), making taking any more pointless.

Here we decided to take a picture of the Hickson 73 group of galaxies (HCG 73) which turned out to be rather a nice group, with a spiral near the center:

Instrument: FS

We didn't have much time left, so we thought we could take a picture of the Hickson galaxy group using hydrogen-alpha. Time ran out though, and all we were allowed was about 5 seconds, so that's what we took. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough time to collect enough light to outweigh a defect that is on the hydrogen alpha filter, so all it looks like is white noise (or like a television gone wrong!):

Unfortunately, both observing days were cancelled for imaging the supernova remnant, yesterday because the data the researchers wanted didn't come through, and today because they deemed the moon was too close and its bright light would 'wash out' that of the much fainter supernova remnant. So, today we decided to try and find some other interesting objects in the Virgo clusters:

20th May 2011
Although this one is labelled 'unknown', further research has shown it to be spiral galaxy NGC 4388, which is a Seyfert 2 galaxy (one which has an active black hole, but is seen sideways on)

This one is of the Siamese Twin galaxies (NGC 4567 and NGC 4568)...though they look like they're 'joined at the hip', it isn't certain whether they are interacting with each other or not:

[We also took a picture of 'The Eyes' Galaxy, which seemed to have been processed properly right until the moment we could see it, then (bless technology!) it disappeared :-( So, we will have to try and take an image another day!]

11b1 Ingenious use of technology!

Period 4 today Year 11 used FTS and got some images.

We knew about the possiblility of seeing Hartley's comet, but didn’t know if it was observable from Australia at this time.

We had RA and dec so tried it – but no luck. We then went for the easy option of the guided tour – only to find it didn’t work! I then frantically tried various Messier objects until one was observable and we went for that – M42 Orion’s nebula.

A quick thinking student in the group, Kleber Noel, used his ipod planisphere to see what other Messier objects were around Orion, and found M30 and M79, two Globular Clusters.

(Kleber gets a badge for quick thinking and saving the lesson!)

Astronomy club catches Hartley's Comet

The Astronomy Club had some fun thanks to Anne booking FTN four 4pm GMT – when comet 103P was available. Got some fine pictures of this. We did a colour one (which you know about), also did a few fed only ones without moving the telescope. With these we hope to see the motion of the Comet against the background stars? Also got M42 and M43.

It is their Herstmonceux trip next week...

Faulkes Telescope Yr 7 16th July 2010

Apart from the first image of a globular cluster, M2, (left), which didn't come up with anything, the rest of the viewing session went well.

The students controlling the telescope in Hawaii today were: Jacob Miller, Verity Game, Will Hopkins, Euan Palmer and (for a few seconds, before we ran out of time) Rhys Newman.

The sky was clear and we managed to get three good images:

Wadhurst Primary School 14th July 2010

Today, Mr Pert visited Wadhurst Primary School and showed the Faulkes Telescope to two year groups (Yr4 & Yr5). Luckily, though rain was forecast for today (and they were getting some on neighbouring islands of Hawaii), there was no sign of it over Haleakalu, the mountain where the telescope is.

Four beautiful images were taken, the last of which (NGC 5907) we haven't taken a picture of before, and we are delighted with. Often the pictures we take of spiral galaxies are face-on [like looking down on a dinner plate), which makes for a dramatic image. This galaxy, however, is sideways-on [like bending down and looking at the plate on the table at eye-level]. We hope the pupils of Wadhurst Primary School enjoyed it as much as we did.

St Richard's Gifted & Talented Yr8s

Yesterday, Mr Pert and seven Yr8 students from Uplands [Charlie Oliver, Oscar Silburn, Amy Walter, Reece Lyons, Amie Smith, Cambell Chase & Joe Smiles] attended a Gifted & Talented conference at St Richard's Catholic College in Bexhill. We were one of eight schools invited.

The highlight for the 60-odd G&T students (and Mr Pert) was the star of the morning, Johny Ball, who gave a very entertaining talk on mathematics in many forms, including topics as varied as the Egyptian Pyramids and binary numbers! As those who remember him, from television shows back in the 1970s to 1990s, might guess, Mr Ball applied his usual sense of humour and enthusiasm to his favourite topic!

Some schools (including Chailey, Grove (Hastings), Bexhill high and Uplands) remained after lunch to participate in the afternoon's Science Masterclasses. The students had the choice of three workshop groups: solar telescope; spectroscopy (flame tests based on Einstein's e=hf) and a Faulkes Telescope session run by Mr Pert.

Faulkes Telescope group:
Before the time they were booked to take control of the Faulkes Telescope in Hawaii at 2.30pm (BST), the students in Mr Pert's workshop had plenty of opportunity to talk about the telescope and to use the Stellarium program to explore the Hawaiian night sky in advance. They chose several interesting objects they would like to view and take images of. Normally, Mr Pert will check the images are within the telescope's range, and not too close to the horizon or other bright objects, such as the Moon, Jupiter or Saturn, but this time he took the plunge and let the students enter the RA and Dec of each object they'd found.

The first two came out nicely:

Unfortunately, as luck would have it (and weather is one of those unpredictable things in life we often put down to luck!) it clouded over half way through the session, producing these two disappointing images:

M72 and M59
. . . .

Once control of the telescope came to an end, the group were able to look at the images, discuss the session and answer questions.

Thanks to St Richard's, Johny Ball and those who ran the workshops, the day was thoroughly enjoyed by all!

Faulkes Telescope 7s2 (30th June 2010)

A lovely clear sky for class 7s2 to do their viewing.

It was an amazing experience for the students who took turns to control the telescope by first entering the RA and Dec (Right Ascension and Declination...the astral equivalent to longitude and latitude).
Once the telescope had shown the area of sky to be imaged, it was time to push the 'move telescope' button. It amazed the class to see the telescope moving even though it was dark. A smaller infrared telescope detects the heat the Faulkes Telescope has absorbed (takes in) in the daytime and emits (sends out) for some time after the sun goes down.

Not only did we have a clear sky, but the sky objects the students chose to image were fairly close together, and we managed to take pictures of five different objects...all very beautiful!

Once we lost control of the telescope again, it was the students' chance to ask questions. We covered areas such as

  • The size of our sun compared to other suns, how stars form and that our sun is a star;
  • Black holes - how they are made, whether they have been seen, where everything that's sucked into them goes (and whether or not anyone has ever fallen into one!)
  • The difference between Supernovas and Hypernovas (a matter of size...)

and many more fascinating questions.
